Trimming
Step 2: Trimming the Frog

If the rasp is impeded by the height of the frog, we use the flat edge of the knife to lower it. The frog is surprisingly hard to trim because of its rubbery texture. We basically shave layers off the frog with firm pressure on the flat edge of the knife. We start at the apex of the frog and pull straight back towards the heel. We use the right handed knife to shave off the left side of the frog and the left handed knife to shave off the right side of the frog. It takes practice to gain the confidence to trim the frog, but it is very hard to do much damage as long as you don’t let the knife go deep. We check frog height by holding the rasp across the heels. We make sure the rasp doesn’t rock across the frog. If it does, we try to bring the frog down further.
